- Summary
- Apologizes for the delay in answering John Jay's letter of 9 May 1815 concerning Amherst's lands in America. His original wish was to retain the whole estate as an object of value for his children. This has become difficult as his interests have been abandoned by those who were to watch over them. Van Alen, his agent in America, was negligent in allowing the sale of part of the land, despite John Jay's advice to the contrary in the clearest terms. Contemplates the sale of the remainder since its value has been so far reduced. Does not wish to entrust Van Alen, and therefore asks John Jay's recommendation of a person to whom this business might be delegated. News of his family in England.
