- He and his family have been reading Sketches of the Life and Character of Patrick Henry by William Wirt, in which the question of the authorship of the Address to the People of England is raised. He has never doubted John Jay's role as author, but as the subject which then caused such serious consequences will tend to excite speculation, he believes that it ought to be explained by John Jay, who alone is capable.
