United States--History--Revolution, 1775-1783; Jay, John, 1745-1829
Summary
Sends copy of his letter to Congress, April 29, listing reasons he
believes English will make conquest of New York State their first and main object in
next campaign. Also encloses copy of letter of same date to John Hancock arguing that it
would be wrong to send major part of the army to Jersey as Howe's ships provide a
retreat and means of cutting off Continental troops recrossing the Hudson. Further
military advice about the Hudson Highlands, "the keys of American liberty." Problems in
refortifying Ticonderoga. Defection of Tories.
