United States--History--Revolution, 1775-1783; Jay, John, 1745-1829
Summary
Jay has probably heard of the British victory at Charleston, for the news
came slowly overland to Philadelphia. The British are laying waste to the state of South
Carolina, and act contrary to the terms of capitulation entered into b y General
Lincoln. This is probably not to America's disadvantage, for every state, having once
suffered the passage of a British army, thereafter fights with renewed vigor for the
cause of freedom. The loss of Charleston has awakened a spirit unknown since 1776, and
that spirit pervades the mass of the community. He is more concerned what effect the
disaster will have in Europe.
