- Summary
- Reply to Hartley's letter of 5 January. Will send copy of letter to Monroe in Paris to expedite case of the Miniconis. Does not foresee early peace in Europe. Men, in the main, are "neither reasonable or virtuous; and hence it has happened, that so many systems which were calculated on the supposed Prevalence of Reason and Virtue, have proved delusive." Realism is as necessary in politics as in religion or philosophy.
