- Summary
- Illness has prevented John Jay from answering Temple's letter of November 10th sooner. Thinks that Lawrence's case should be handled informally as his petition "contains expressions which are not unexceptionable, and but little calculated to inspire Congress with a desire to comply with his wishes, further than mere justice might dictate." Points out that Lawrence never pled the treaty in the three causes which he cites. As far as John Jay can learn, then, no treaty violations were involved in the judgments against Lawrence in Morrisania and Staten Island.
