- Still has not found a serving woman for John Jay; he thought Mrs. Grant would do, but found her 'a very vulgar Irishwoman' who could not sew and sometimes drank too much. Has heard from Mr. Munro that Maria's health is improving. Clarke has had problems getting hay. Describes the situation with General Clarkson's father's will, made in 1784. He had been afraid the British government would confiscate his property and divided up the inheritance among his children. The General exhibited nobility in his actions in this matter. Describes horrible accident to Mr. King's young son. Financial discussion about John Jay's mortgage.
