- Summary
- His delicacy in accepting the appointment from the Governor is natural, but even delicacy has its limits. As he has already consented to accept, and has indicated his politics would not change, he cannot consistently refuse the office now. His conduct should evince his good faith as a Federalist and also self-respect and the decorum which his office requires. When we say and do only what is proper we need not fear the consequences. Includes his suggestion for a letter to the Governor acknowledging the honor of the appointment and praising the liberality "which did not permit my Fidelity to another Party to become an obstacle."
