- Summary
- Attended the meeting he had mentioned to John Jay. It's plan was formed in Connecticut, and leading Federalists were invited from all states to decide on a candidate for the next election. It was proposed at first to support Mr. Clinton, which proposal was turned down by all New England and nearly all southern New York delegates. A resolution was drafted by a committee which was meant to recommend Clinton without specifically saying so; it was protested by King and Morris, though without effect. A resolution was passed also which said that since it appeared impracticable to elect a Federal candidate, none would be nominated. Thinks it doubtful Clinton will succeed, even with party aid. Papers tell of Monmouth's defeat and the gain of the Russians over the French in Poland. Family and personal business news.
