- Summary
- Personal business news. The Clintonians talk against the war but their newspapers support it. They are too cunning to be wise; thus in the annexation of the first two wards of the city to Long Island they will defeat themselves, since either the New York Federalists or the Madisonians of Suffolk will elect the Members to Congress. However, it was thought best to preserve the appearance of union among the Democrats rather than lessen the opinion of Mr. Clinton's influence. The same policy operated at the time of the embargo, and will probably prevent a union with the Federalists on the present occasion.
