Summary
The more violent members of the convention begin to gather strength which might result in attempts of drastic measures regarding the judiciary. There has been a long argument over the appointment of justices of the peace. Mr. Benson proposed a plan favorable to the dominant party in retaining the power of appointment of these magistrates to Albany. Those desirous that the minority not be excluded proposed election of the justices by the people, enraging the Jacobins by obliging them to argue contrary to their own professions. Both plans were defeated; the power has been given to the Supervisors and County Court. The discussion has produced animosity between Benson's followers and the New York delegation, which seems to be alarmed and is acting feebly.
