- Summary
- The Otsego votes will decide the election. Of the canvassers, eight are for Clinton, three for Jay. The name of Livingston is disgraced by the activities of Brockholst and Edward. Canvassers asked opinion of Rufus King and Aaron Burr; King for counting Otsego votes, Burr, inspired by hurt feelings, gave an opinion that cuts both ways-casts odium on governor for letting office of sheriff stand vacant, but declares the Otsego votes void. Opinions of lawyers concerning the legality of Otsego votes are being published. On the 12th, Sarah Jay continues the letter The canvassers have taken upon themselves the election of a governor, and the Otsego votes are rejected. The praises which are showered upon Jay and the protests against Clinton, make Jay's defeat one of high honor.
