- Summary
- Holland has agreed to recognize American independence. They have received Mr. Adams in his public character. Progress in negotiating. The late English Ministry contacted France to persuade her to abandon American independence. Some time after Adams was applied to at The Hague. He also said that nothing could be done but in common with France. The new Ministry has sent emissaries to the French, to Adams, and to Franklin. The French have refused the question until American plenipotentiaries were admitted into the negotiations. Adams and Franklin have said that any attempt for a separate peace was nothing but a loss of time. Lafayette hopes that before long a Northern power will enter into a treaty of commerce. This information must be kept secret.
