- Repeats his condolences on the blindness of Peter Jay's children. Reports that Augustus has been told that it is likely his brother and sister would never see again. Samuel Johnson hopes that the extra help Augustus is getting in reading from a woman who runs a successful school will be beneficial. Encloses a catechism Augustus wishes to give to his brother and sister. Is glad that Peter Jay plans a visit in September. Johnson intends to visit New York before winter and depends on Peter Jay and other friends to inform him whether the city is safe from small pox.
