- Has received John Jay's of January 7, 1777 (not located). Timothy Jones is agreeable; his letter of September 17, 1777 showed him a cold man though John Jay's observation more acute than that of "a Sea Captain" Morris handed "a copy of your discovery" to the Committee because measures necessary in consequence of it. Morris' Committee in Philadelphia now takes care of 7/8 of the "trash" that used to take up 3/4 of Congress' debates; yet Morris has urged Congress to return to Philadelphia. Asks John Jay's help in effecting exchange of Major West who would recruit fast in the back country. John Jay's absence in Congress is felt; many others are absent and Maryland is not represented and Jersey and Delaware represented but rarely.
