- Received Jay's of March 12 (not located). Has just had an alarm that the enemy coming up the river (to Philadelphia); hopes the people of the state "may act like men." Morris suggested Congress adopt a motto Conquer or Die to be inscribed on a standard but the proposal was rejected. Morris hopes that when peace comes he and Jay will be neighbors. Notes some stock news, sale and stud fees. April 17: nine sail of men of war in the river now. Livingston and Duane have arrived. Morris encloses an old letter to Jay which was returned to Morris without delivery.
