Has given Mr. Burges pound 10 for the two clerks who copied the Treaty. Burges told Trumbull that it was customary for the Foreign Minister who concluded a Treaty to receive a portrait of the King and a proportional gift to the Secretary of such a Minister. John Jay's gift is already being prepared. Trumbull told Burges that he believed that American officials were prohibited from receiving presents of any kind from foreign power. Asks John Jay if this answer was correct.
