Burges told Trumbull that it was customary for the Foreign Minister who concluded a Treaty to receive a portrait of the King and a proportional gift to the Secretary of such a Minister. John Jay's gift is already being prepared. Trumbull told Burges that he believed that American officials were prohibited from receiving presents of any kind from foreign power.
