Summary
While assisting the Attorney General during his arrest, he found Hoffman's debts to be much less than were generally supposed. A satisfactory settlement will probably be soon concluded. He has resolved to sacrifice private convenience and return to Albany in accordance with opinion. Troup thinks Carpenter's story about the warrant is "gross calumny," and that all these items are worthy of consideration before Hoffman's continuance in office is discussed. It has been thought the Attorney General has in several instances overridden John Jay's wishes in maneuvering with the Council of Appointment; he has been warned by Troup and Hamilton against continuing the practice.
