United States--History--Revolution, 1775-1783; Jay, John, 1745-1829
Summary
Has not been able to write until now -- few inns can afford candles fit to
read or write by. Happy the cattle has arrived. Discusses their condition. Paid 20
dollars for the bull, 21 for the two heifers and 3 for driving them to Providence.
Election appears very doubtful. Very hard to get accurate information. Expects the
majority to be smaller than either party expects. Is calm about the possible outcomes:
"we cannot command events, but we ought to command ourselves." Mr. Callender and Mr.
Marchant asked about you. Always remember to enquire after people whom you've met.
Should learn to bear good and evil we meet with; it is just as hard to bear the good
things with propriety as it is the evil.
