- Hartley tells them that Britain will probably be liberal in regard to commercial treaty. He [John Jay] feels that all commercial treaties should be on the basis of reciprocity, and that United States should not permit Britain to have perpetual carrying rights on the American shores of the Great Lakes. John Jay will return to United States in summer of 1784.
