On the 16th Jay writes that due to his wife's illness he has decided not to go to Aranjuez. Carmichael to inform Montmorin of this and to offer Galvez congratulations on his brother's success. Carmichael is to keep a regular journal of such intelligence and events relative to the objects and business of the legation. Unless something urgent occurs which would require his presence at Aranjuez, he does not plan to go there until Monday or Tuesday. He has not heard anything from Franklin. In a note appended and dated 17 June, Jay notes that he has written to Floridablanca that he will not be in Aranjuez that day and asks Carmichael to deliver his note to Floridablanca this day.
