Summary
Yesterday received [from Del Campo] Livingston's letter from December 13th including a number of other documents from November and December -- a copy of an earlier letter, newspapers and several resolutions of Congress on: money, enforcing the Law of Nations, allowing the Marquis de Lafayette to go to France, captures and a call for men. Received set of codes endorsed by Secretary Thomson and sent to a banker by Mr. Barclay through the mail. Mail had been opened. Has heard there are letters for him on the brig Betsey but has received nothing. Has not yet seen or heard from the Marquis de Lafayette, although there are letters brought by him. Urges use of special couriers instead of the regular post. Had not yet written official letters to Livingston because not sure he had taken up his post already, but now promises to write faithfully. Encloses copy of letter sent to Congress on October 3, rendering further explanation unnecessary. Still worried about the bills and American credit in Europe.
