- Summary
- Floridablanca's invitation to Jay for dinner was sent by mistake and now recalled. But he has invited Jay as a private gentleman. Jay going to decline because it impeaches his character as the official representative of an independent power (which America considers itself). America would decline in the respect of other nations if Jay appeared as a private person even though others might feel that Spain was about to become America's ally. Sorry to have to turn down Floridablanca's favor. (Autograph letter signed.)
