- Summary
- Encloses a copy of the proceedings of a public meeting on slavery held at Trenton. Leaves it to the reader's discretion to organize a plan of co-operation and to correspond with the appointed committee as soon as possible. The meeting, held on 29 October 1819, resolved among other things that the permission of slaves in the new states admitted to the Union tends to perpetuate the institution. It solicits the Senators and Representatives in Congress from New Jersey to try and prevent the introduction of slavery into Missouri and every other new state admitted from now on. Although the prohibition of slavery is not contained in the Constitution, it is in full accordance with principles contained therein and is demanded by the honor and interests of the country.
