- Summary
- Objects to publication of an extract of his letter of May 27th, which will probably have unfortunate results upon his relationship with Vergennes. Suggests that when Congress is prepared to strike new coins, he knows a Swiss named Drost, who has devised a method for striking beautiful coins on both sides and the edges at one stroke. The Man is willing to come to America to train artisans in this craft. Consular convention still remains unmentioned, since he does not wish to proceed by informing the French of the Scheme, lest the United States lose an advantage should they have forgotten it. Will go to the baths in southern France to care for his hand, which will also serve as an excuse for the delay. Perhaps it would be best for Congress to instruct him in private instructions concerning the Scheme. Assembly of Notables is being called for the first time in 160 years, and much conjecture is afoot concerning the reason for this step. Great desire to encourage manufactures is present in France. Several English industrialists and artisans are in France. Port of Honfleur at the mouth of the Seine promises to provide an excellent entrepot for American rice.
