- Summary
- The King is satisfied with the conduct of French officers towards the commanders of the American ship which visited China. The King has ordered Vergennes to mention to Jefferson that the Americans have paid very little attention to the principles of reciprocity intended in the treaty of 6 February 1778. Several states have passed laws injurious to the trade of France. Without reciprocity, the trade of the two countries cannot flourish, and the King will be forced to restore equality in commerce by other means. According to Julian P. Boyd, Papers of Thomas Jefferson, enclosed in: 2 January 1786, Jefferson to John Jay. Copy (in French) and Trans.
