- Summary
- When Lafayette received a letter from Congress asking him to make inquiries about the period in which American merchants must pay their English debts, he immediately went to Vergennes and pointed out the importance of a favorable decision to French trade. Lafayette would like further information on the American situation and the steps he should take in the future. The favorable terms of the treaty of peace have given him great pleasure.
