Summary
Because of the bad weather Washington did not receive Sir James' letter of 20December until 17 January. The delay in getting Lady Huntington's communications to the legislatures will cost a delay of a year. Washington agrees with Lady Huntington in thinking that Christianity will never make progress among the Indians until they are brought to a higher state of civilization. The Indians' taste for ease, impatience of control, and dislike of any pursuits other than hunting and war would discourage anyone with less than Lady Huntington's zeal, piety, and philanthrophy. New York is the only state with unoccupied lands adjacent to Indian settlements. Pennsylvania and North Carolina have no free land to devote to the Indians.
