Summary
Reply to Hartley's letter of August. Reflects on the chances of the United States for happiness: "I am inclined to think they will be, because in my Opinion more Light and Knowledge are diffused thro' the mass of the People of this Country than of any other." Cautious optimism on the score of the French Revolution. Glad to hear that British antagonism toward Americans has almost vanished. Hopes two nations will survive as friends and allies. Agrees with Hartley on the delicacy with which the matter of formal government comments on the King George's recovery should be handled.
