- Is surprised that his letter, containing the letter from Don Juan, has not arrived. Is piqued by the shortness of Jay's letter. War news. John Adams and Mr. Searle are in Holland. American affairs are in a bad state. There are many intrigues in France, London, and America. Jay should not be surprised at anything. "A revolution may happen in 3 months at present not suspected on either party." A. Lee was at Philadelphia publishing a new edition of Common Sense. "Nothing that he can say or Congress resolve can alter facts... the state of America wrings my very soul. Ruined on the one part by weak distracted councils and betrayed on the other by those in whom it has confided.
