Summary: Jay says he never gave Cabarrus any directions for the presentation of his accounts except through Carmichael and he fails to understand what Carmichael means when he writes that a change in instructions (from Jay to Cabarrus) necessitates Carmichael's comparing once again the Cabarrus accounts with the paid bills of exchange. What he does know is that Franklin wants the accounts and wanted them at the time Jay left Madrid to come to Paris. The sooner these money matters are settled the better, for if anything happens to Carmichael they would be difficult to liquidate. He is also anxious to settle his private accounts with Cabarrus and with Carmichael. He cannot understand why Carmichael wrote that he was paying Littlepage his quarterly salary and would place it to his own account if such payment was contrary to Jay's intentions, when Jay gave him very clear instructions on what to do about Littlepage.
