Summary
The only letters of Carmichael that have reached him since he left Madrid are those dated 28 May, 8 June and 3 and 9 July. He has not written to Carmichael until now because he has been ill with influenza. He is behind in his correspondence and has not been able to have serious discussions with Aranda until now. Instructs Carmichael to sell his mules at whatever price they will fetch, to retain his house for the present and not to give Littlepage any more money until Jay gives Carmichael express directions for that purpose. Does not have time to give news from America in any detail. He is well pleased with France and perfectly satisfied with his reception. Oswald is here. Fitzherbert has replaced Grenville. He has fully and accurately stated to Dr. Bancroft the affair of his letters.
