- Jay thinks that the convention has acted candidly respecting the new constitution, and he thinks that the document is advisable. He cannot visit Ridley because of his official situation. Jay hopes that Ridley will be able to disengage himself from whatever action his state takes in the affair of Messrs. Van Staphorsts, especially if the state might settle it in terms of bad faith. Sugar is scarce at present. Thanks for the beer. Jay desires to know how the Dutch have settled with Prussia and England.
