- Summary
- Jay has given Lafayette a summary account of his position in Spain Floridablanca has ordered the balance due on the account of $150,000 (about $26,000) to be paid to Cabarrus and told Jay that no more was to be expected. $26,000 will not cover the money we owe Cabarrus. Montmorin can do nothing. Cabarrus will supply what we want on promise of Spain or France to pay him in ten or twelve months. Would not be surprised of Spain was willing to let American credit be ruined for want of 25,000 pounds but has too high an opinion of Montmorin to believe he would act the same part.
