- Church controversy rages on. Whigs intend to deprive Mr. Moore, a Tory, of the rectorship, which is perfectly right during this critical situation. Election for city legislature yesterday; not all candidates equal to the task. Dancing assembly opposed from religious or political motives; managers Augustus Van Cortland and Daniel Ludlow resigned. Other balls mentioned, one in honor of General Washington. Dr. Bancroft spent agreeable visit; will return in Spring. Hears Robert Morris determined to quit his office May 1st. Unsure of where Jay is at present, Paris or London. Peter stays over the winter. He works hard on writing and has read Robinson Crusoe, Don Quixote and parts of the Bible and has memorized hymns. Remarks on complexion and state of his teeth.
