- Summary
- John Jay's affections are deeply rooted in America, and he can never feel at home in Europe. His health has improved. His desire to see his son plus other reasons has decided him to come home. The Ottoman and Russian empires are on the point of war. If Russia should extend her navigation to Constantinople, the United States might profit. However, what we do abroad is not as important as what we do at home. America must be unified. Boundaries must be settled. "The rapid progress of luxury at Philadelphia is a frequent topic of conversation here; and what is a little remarkable, I have not heard a single person speak of it in terms of approbation."
