- Summary
- Mr. John Watkins prepares to leave for New York and will be able to see the Jays. Being isolated in the "rude wilderness" makes her remember with fondness her friends in New York. Will not send for their children this winter, as the snow will probably be gone, disappointing little Lydia. Is trying to persuade Susan to accept Mrs. Bayard's invitation and travel as far as Schenectady, but she does not want to leave Judith alone. Asks if Mr. Cuyler can inquire about a painting she left in Albany -- "The destruction of Sir Clowdisley Shovell's fleet." Believes a German they had hired when they left Benson's stole another painting of the New York harbor, because he fled when they left the city.
