- Summary
- Congratulates him on the birth of his son. As to the request that John Jay be one of the godfathers, he feels it advisable that a younger person should be selected. Such an honor imposes an obligation, as "whoever consents to be employed as a Shepherd, should recollect, that if a Lamb be lost by his negligence, he must answer for it to the owner of the Flock." If Morris should nevertheless adhere to his request, Jay's consent cannot be withheld, but he can appear only by proxy.
