Summary
Replies to the charge that in excuse for not paying a certain account he had alleged a want of money in the Treasury. Relates the settlement of the account of Mr. Carpenter which he believes is the one in question. Concerning his arrest in New York, a suit was brought against him for $11,000 while the amount owed was only $1090. Also, he has never refused to state or settle his accounts as a public officer; if there is a balance against him it is a small one. Pecuniary embarrassments have mainly resulted from his being security to others, and have never rendered him incapable of attending to the duties of Attorney General. Moreover, these embarrassments have greatly subsided, thanks to the exertions of Mr. Troup. John Jay's friendship is highly esteemed, and he hopes to be restored to the Governor's confidence.
