- Summary
- His last letter was not official but was meant to apprize Hoffman of certain facts. Mr. Carpenter had complained that his account remained unsatisfied. There is no connection between a balance due him by the state and money received in trust for specific purposes. All that is needed is to settle accounts and apply for additional money to satisfy demands; to advance personal funds is not expected. Hoffman's embarrassments have excited much sympathy, no persecution. Such conditions are incompatible with the authority, respectability, and independence associated with the office of Attorney General. Uneasiness on this head has been expressed by people who "certainly are not your Enemies."
