- United States--History--Revolution, 1775-1783; Jay, John, 1745-1829
- Summary
- He has received Jay's letter of September (?) 22 last. He notes that Jay has sufficient evidence to be persuaded of the King's interest in the American cause and to realize that his recent request cannot possibly be granted. The vast war expenditures and the extraordinary aid being given to Franklin make it impossible for the King to fulfill the drafts Congress has drawn on Jay. Therefore, it is with the greatest regret that he transmits to Jay so unfavorable a decision. He hopes that he will be able to demonstrate his zeal for the interests of the United States on another occasion.
