Bill drawn on Jay in Williams' favor by Major Franks for 2742.10 pounds. John Jay accepted 2134.10 pounds but does not feel he is chargeable for remaining 608 pounds. Not because he thinks Franks exceeded his proper expenses. A question of Williams' authority to advance the money to Franks on Jay's account. Only authority given was for necessary expenses in Madrid. No responsibility for trip to America.
