- Summary
- Returns the notes which Morris has made relative to his father. Can make no material additions but calls his attention to two mistakes. 1st, Jay, and not Morris's uncle, Richard, was the first chief justice of New York. 2nd, Jay was not a member of the state legislature when the Confiscation Act was passed; it was his opinion that the act should have been limited to those guilty of perfidy or cruelty. Believes Morris's mother was a daughter of William Walton's brother, his impression being that Walton himself had no children. Has heard that an account of the family from an early period is in existence; this might yield facts to add to the notes, as might letters written by Morris's father when away on public business. Biographical narratives should be done accurately and interestingly rather than with speed; hopes this will be the case with Morris.
