Summary
Has received his request for documents and anecdotes illustrative of the public services of his grandfather, Charles DeWitt. Since he and Colonel DeWitt served their country in different states during the Revolution they were not often under each other's observation. The journals and papers of the state conventions exhibit acts and proceedings in which the Colonel cooperated, but those records and other particulars cannot now be distinctly remembered. When the convention was at Kingston he frequently visited DeWitt in Green kill. When reports came that the enemy were entering Jersey, Jay determined to fetch his wife, then with her father's family and the Colonel loaned him his plough horse. He declined any compensation for this, stating that the pleasure of serving Jay was sufficient.
