Summary
Received John Jay's letter enclosing two pamphlets, one of which Adams is sending on to Mr. Jefferson in Paris. The character of the writer is at the same time condescending and impertinent. Those like Mr. Littlepage, the writer, give the native-born American a bad reputation. Purity of character is unfortunately no guard against attacks both rude and virulent. Moreover, both Jay and Adams know that such people as Littlepage are important for 'doing business which cannot be done by fairer means.'
