- Summary
- Concerns American property held by the late Sir Henry Clinton in New York that the Legislature confiscated during the Revolutionary War. Does not know if the Legislature would restore the property if asked; has no personal interest in the case as has never purchased confiscated land. As for the article he mentioned in the Jay Treaty -- remember "distinction between a Recommendation and a Stipulation to restore". If his brother stops in New York from the West Indies, he will find honest legal opinion and will be received by Jay. Would prefer to not revive negative situation as it existed between the two countries but instead foster mutual justice.
