- Summary
- Thanks him for the favorable remarks on his sermon. Eloquence is important to the ministerial functions. The observations on extempore preaching are just, but his practice does not conform to them, as he cannot write as many sermons as he feels it best to preach. Also, the taste in New York for extempore preaching must to some extent be gratified. Was ordained 4 September 1811 over "a poor, scattered, yet pious people." Had a narrow escape from drowning the previous night and has resolved to be in a better state of preparedness for death in future.
