- Summary
- Has often been solicited to request John Jay's permission to make public his letters on Washington's valedictory address, but has not deemed himself warranted to do so. However, recent "base endeavours" by the Hamilton family and requests from the Historical Society of Pennsylvania induce him to ask for John Jay's sentiments on his former letters. Mrs. Hamilton went to Mount Vernon and prevailed on Judge Washington to search for papers written by her husband, but nothing to suit her purposes could be found. Suspects that Hamilton never sent on his copy of the Address with the amendments contained in it, and this document has "roused the vanity" of his wife and family. Includes copies of letters from the Historical Society asking that they might make known John Jay's letter to the public.
