- Summary
- John Jay's proof of Washington's authorship of the Farewell Address convince some but not the bulk of society. W. Lewis and Dr. Mason continue in praise of Hamilton. Lewis claims there are notes in the latter's writing which contain the major points of the address. Will write to Lewis stating John Jay's facts without mentioning his name if necessary. When Jay says he made "no alteration of importance," does he refer to Washington's or Hamilton's draft? Could not John Jay set Mason right through King, who he thinks has the complete copy in Hamilton's writing. Washington showed his address to Pickering who made no corrections, but Lewis' stories are making a great impression on the latter. Delicacy should not keep Jay from bringing forth the facts; if Hamilton were alive he would clear the matter up, and Washington would wish Jay to declare what he knows.
