United States--History--Revolution, 1775-1783; Jay, John, 1745-1829
Summary
Thanks him for the pamphlets, particularly that on the Calorimotor. His
previous acquaintance with the physical sciences has convinced him of their extensive
utility, and gratitude is due to those who increase our knowledge about them. The first
discovery concerning Galvanism was its effects on the nerves of animals, which however
furnished no theory to explain its phenomena. If Hare establishes affinity between heat
and Galvanism he will throw light on an obscure subject in natural philosophy by proving
the material nature of both agents. This may lead to discoveries of as much consequence
as the lightening rod. Suggests that the word Calorimotor is too much like Calorimeter;
perhaps another term could be used.
